Overview

This dive planner follows the philosophy that there is no such thing as a “no decompression dive”. No matter how shallow the depth or short the bottom time, by diving you will incur the poorly understood consequences of breathing mixed gasses at an atmospheric pressure well beyond our normal operating range. Care should be taken to carefully control the ascent rate and follow a decompression stop protocol for all dives, even those within recreational no-stop limits, to minimize the stresses on our bodies.

Given information about the depth, time and a breathing mix this dive planner will compute decompression profiles using three common models:

Bühlmann	The Bühlmann model is the oldest and most widely used of the three. It tracks the buildup of inert gasses in our tissues and assigns stops to control the rate at which those gasses are released.
Varying Permeability Model	VPM is a more recent approach that models the growth and size of bubbles.
Ratio Decompression	Ratio Deco is a technique that came from observations made by the technical cave diving community.

All three of these models use very rough approximations of how the human body is affected by breathing compressed gasses at depth. Each makes different assumptions and was created and tested by individuals completing dives under different conditions. Although the details of these algorithms is far beyond the scope of this summary page it should be noted that each of these models uses vastly different calculations to try and compute a dive profile that reduces the risk of decompression injuries.

Good dive planing involves comparing the profiles generated by several models, analyzing where they agree and where they disagree, and tailoring them to your own individual needs.
